White subway tile is ever popular, but a style that has been gaining in popularity in recent years is to pair white subway tile with dark gray grout in a running‐brick pattern. The resulting look defines the outlines of each tile, adding depth and interest to a space. The wider set the tiles are, the more pronounced the outline effect becomes and the bolder the look.
Fit the space. "Because of the size of this kitchen and the height of the ceiling, we needed a fixture that not only had the appropriate width, but also height", says Kristin Petro of Kristin Petro Interiors. "With its tiered design, a chandelier fits the space perfectly. In addition, the white cabinetry and backsplash provide a neutral backdrop, which lets the intricate style of the chandelier really pop".
Glossy, uniformly painted cabinets can appear fresh, clean and modern. If you're trying to create a more French country look, distressed cabinets are a great place to start. There's no reason not to experiment with color on your distressed cabinets. Tans, whites and creams are always a safe bet, but a light French gray is a new neutral. Grays can be cold on occasion, but distressing them so the wood peeks through warms them right up.
