Doing so will save the average home 500 gallons of water annually. You can also add an aerator to bathroom taps. An aerator decreases water flow while maintaining or even increasing water pressure by mixing water with air. And regardless of how much water comes out of your tap, don't forget to turn off the faucet while shaving or brushing teeth.

Published at Monday, September 18th 2017, 08:09:08 AM by Orlene Lefebvre. Bedroom. With a new school year upon us, now is the perfect time to give that teen lair an overhaul – and hopefully eke out a bit of quality bonding time in the process. To make this a successful decorating experience, it helps to keep an open mind about your teen's creative direction. Recognize that he or she has good ideas, and at the same time set clear limits that work for you (a project budget, paint but not wallpaper etc.) for results that will make both of you happy in the end. Start an ideabook and create a floor plan. Gather inspiration images and collect the best in an ideabook on Houzz. Just looking at all the images together should help clarify what your son or daughter wants. Once you have the general style nailed down, sketch out ideas for the new floor plan. A taller‐than‐average bedside table can do double duty as a desk – a great space saver in a small room. Also, think about adding a focal point over the headboard. A quirky sculpture, artwork or a pretty textile are all good choices. Just be sure anything that could fall on the bed is very well secured and not too heavy. Think about color and lighting. Once you know the look you are after, it's time to think about paint. Use extra‐large paint swatches or get sample‐size amounts to try out colors directly on the wall before buying enough for the whole room to avoid a misstep. Lighting can instantly make the biggest change in a room, so now is also the time to create a lighting plan. Add ambience with café lights strung across the ceiling, install a dimmer switch for an overhead fixture and don't forget proper task lighting for the homework area.

"The inspiration for this bathroom was elegant glamour", says Jamie Herzlinger of Jamie Herzlinger Design. "The easiest way to get elegance into your bathroom is by using a frameless shower, because it keeps the look clean and sleek". Embrace minimalism. "We were looking to have the colors of the limestone tile bounce light around the room and to use few if any noticeable details, in keeping with our firm's philosophy of embracing minimalism", says David Webber of Webber + Studio Architects. Infuse a sense of calm. "I was inspired by the tranquil river and landscape surrounding this home to create a peaceful sanctuary that brought the outdoors in", says Justine Sterling of Justine Sterling Design. "The frameless shower design was key in creating transparency, openness and a sense of calm". Invite nature to be your guest. "This master bath is in a summer home on a lake, and the back of the house faces the woods", says Nora Schneider of Nora Schneider Interior Design. "The shower faces an entire wall of windows overlooking the woods, and I wanted to invite nature in as an evergreen guest".

Published at Monday, September 18th 2017, 08:08:21 AM by Natzu Shimizu. Bedroom. Envision a deeply restorative space. The best way to begin any design project is with a clear vision of your hopes for the end result. Take a moment to ponder what your ideal bedroom space would look like and how it would feel – the scent, the textures, the sounds. Create as clear a picture as you possibly can, and hold that in your mind as you move forward with the project. Clean the air. Air quality affects health and wellness, and poor air quality can impact sleep. The easiest way to clean the air in your bedroom is simply to open your windows. Commit to letting fresh air into your bedroom for at least 10 minutes each day, and the air quality is sure to improve. To take it a step further, you may want to add several potted plants and an air purifier. Limit technology and remove emotional clutter. When you visualized your ideal bedroom, I'd wager that it wasn't filled with clutter or the tangle of wires dangling from your laptop. Giving yourself a break from tech devices at night will help promote deeper rest and is probably a good idea healthwise as well. Also, take a moment to consider the things you have stored in your bedroom. Are there boxes of bills and paperwork that make your stomach knot each time you see them? Piles of clothes that no longer fit, workout tools you don't use or photos of friends you have a tense relationship with? All of these things can contribute to stress and insomnia, so out they must go. Clean thoroughly and naturally. Often, our bedrooms fall way down to the bottom of our cleaning to‐do list, simply because not many others have to see these private spaces.

Published at Monday, September 18th 2017, 08:05:42 AM by Manya Matveev. Bedroom. I'm advocating breaking one of my design rules. Well, I don't really believe in strict design rules, but generally I try to keep big investment pieces (like beds) neutral, solid and classic, and bring in prints, patterns, bolder colors and trendy fabrics via less permanent items like rugs, throw pillows, duvet covers and window treatments. However, these gorgeous patterned headboards have been screaming for my attention, and I cannot ignore them any longer. Would you sleep beneath a patterned headboard? If so, what kind of textile or pattern would you use? Let me know in the Comments section! Go bold and go for height – dynamic fabrics and exaggerated verticality on a headboard can change the entire feeling of a room. These brilliant textiles add to the Moroccan style of this home, and the wall behind them painted up to chair‐rail height tricks the eye, distorting how we perceive the colors and proportions. Extend the headboard to new heights to show off a beautiful fabric on it and your shams. It would have been a design travesty not to show off this beautiful suzani fabric. Match a sham or another pillow to the headboard. This will give the bedscape a continuous look vertically, like these damask‐pattern shams do. To tie a larger area to the bed, extend the headboard behind nightstands. A bold trellis pattern grounds this bed with the appropriate scale. You don't have to use fabric to execute this idea. At the Upward Bound House, interior designer Vanessa De Vargas used wallpaper to create the look of an extended headboard. You can also use a special traditional fabric. Design Sponge blogger Grace Bonney helped educate the masses about traditional Mexican Otomi embroidery with her famous DIY headboard.

"My inspiration for this bathroom was modern elegance", says Jamie Herzlinger of Jamie Herzlinger Interior Design. "Modern can sometimes get very cold, but freestanding tubs celebrate luxury and sensuality. So I personally always feel that if you have the time to enjoy a bath, whether alone or with someone else, it’s an occasion that needs to be celebrated. Nothing beats taking a bath in a freestanding tub for a sensual experience". Try this in a smaller bathroom. "Freestanding tubs, or claw‐foots for that matter, have an essence about them", says Sophia Cok of Design Associates. "They have the ability to turn bathing into a luxurious experience".

Published at Monday, September 18th 2017, 08:05:08 AM by Manya Matveev. Kitchen. Create a center of attention. "This kitchen was designed to bring a symmetrical balance to the back, windowed wall", says Marlene Wangenheim of Interiors By Design. "All the materials, though rich, were very played down– for example, the white quartz stone countertops and the Calacatta marble brick tile with mother‐of‐pearl in the backsplash". "The chandelier brings your eye immediately to the center of the room, and then the tour begins", she adds. "The glitz of the chandelier also balances the serene color palette by contrasting it and giving it a wow effect".
