Keim wanted to design a space that would reflect the girl's sweet and energetic personality and fit the style of the rest of the home. Keim and the girl's mother both fell in love with the wallpaper, which dictated the rest of the room's style and color palette. The client trusted Keim, so she was given a lot of room to experiment. While she played around with color and pattern, she carefully choose the furniture so that it would last each girl into her teens and beyond. "I would use those pieces!" she says. The family's 10‐year‐old daughter loves turquoise, so Keim chose a complementary shade of peachy‐orange to help it stand out. "As with most jobs, I take their favorite color and make it the accent color," says Keim. "It usually pops more that way." A custom headboard, grass cloth wall covering, patterned pillows and classic lamps add visual texture and depth to the vibrant space. The tree bookcase was especially exciting for the daughter, and she also loves the special pencil set on her desk. The vintage chair was reupholstered in scraps from Keim's showroom for an eclectic, one‐of‐a‐kind piece. The girls share a large study, a playroom and closets outside of the bedrooms, so Keim didn't have to integrate a lot of storage or play space into these rooms.

In typical Draper fashion, it was girly but still simple and refined. Now that Sally is getting into her tweens and teens, her rebellious side is starting to pop up. Sally may be a a girly girl for at least the beginning of her tween years, but as she starts to develop her own style (and delves into the wild style of the early '70s), bold patterns and color may start to make an appearance in her room. Pale pink walls can be replaced with a vibrant (but tasteful) lavender, and a bright pink duvet can cover up the old floral bedding. A graphic rug gives this bedoom the final dose of that great mod style.

Here's a step‐by‐step guide to a well‐dressed, pretty and polished bed. If you've got another great tip, share it in the Comments below! Break out the iron. If you're anything like me, you'd rather walk through Death Valley at high noon in a parka than put your iron to its intended use. (Full disclosure: The last time I unearthed mine, it had cobwebs on it.) But pressed linens are crisp linens, so face your nemesis. A standard ironing board is too small to handle sheets with ease – cover an inexpensive folding table, or even a large sheet of plywood, with heatproof foam or batting to give you more surface area to work with. Don't forget the bed skirt and shams while you're at it. Center and straighten the bedskirt. If your bed style doesn't require a skirt, you can skip this step, though you may want to invest in a box‐spring cover if your box spring is exposed. Pull the mattress pad smooth. Nothing ruins bedtime comfort faster than a lumpy bottom layer, and pads are notorious for bunching in the center of the bed. Tuck the fitted sheet tightly. For optimal fit, use an extra‐deep sheet if you have a pillow‐top or an especially tall mattress; otherwise a standard size should work fine. Pull it taut and tuck the edges beneath the mattress. Drape the flat sheet. Now the tricky part begins. Center the flat sheet on the bed, with equal overhang on either side. Align the top edge with the top edge of the mattress.

Don't let the sloped ceilings and awkward architecture of the attic throw you off – with a little know‐how, you can transform this often‐underused space into cozy sleeping quarters. Whether you're in need of a guest bedroom or simply want a brand‐new space for yourself, check out the following professional tips for setting up a fabulous attic retreat. Arrange your furniture carefully. "Factor in space to sit and stand around main pieces of furniture, like sofas, chests and desks,” says interior designer Meredith Heron. "Be sure to place the bed somewhere that you can get in and out comfortably.” Use sloped ceilings wisely. "Dormers are great for window seats, desks or reading nooks,” says Heron. "These types of activities don't require ceiling height, so where things are constricted, they provide extra function to that space.” If you're short on storage, built‐in shelving is another wise use of the space where a sloped ceiling meets the floor. Consider skylights when arranging your layout. Do you like to read the morning paper in bed? Place your bed beneath the skylights. If you'd prefer natural light while getting ready for the day, arrange your space so your vanity sits under the windows.

Without losing the getaway‐home element, this room has a much more tailored look than most bunk rooms. The bedding is simple and tucked in tightly. The tone on tone of whites gives the room a clean and serene feel. Curtains are neatly stacked with a dense fabric. To get this look with a lighter fabric, have the curtains lined with a heavier solid material to complement the pattern you are working with. Better yet, give your guest bunkers a treat by lining the curtains with blackout fabric. Mix it up. Mismatched bedding can transform the feeling of a bunk room. When beds are snuggled into a small hallway or attic, finding not a single matching sheet, blanket or pillow brings you back to childhood, when the cabin was heaven for old linens, dishes and furniture that weren't being used at home. To create this look, resist the urge to buy sets. See a pillow you like? Just grab it and continue your hunt. Visit antiques stores and look for old wool blankets and quilts. One trip to the dry cleaner and they're ready for bed.
