If you aren't expecting your table to suffer wear and tear, choose the most sophisticated and elegant table you've always dreamed of owning. Black tables are notoriously tricky, especially if they are veneered, because the smallest scratch will show up. If you are the careful type, however, black is super cool and will always be so.

While many dressing tables are fussy, frilly or just too girly for my taste, here I've gathered some of my favorite modern‐looking dressing tables to share with you. Whether you're planning to set up a dressing table in your bedroom, in the bathroom or nearby, these ideas will surely inspire your space. If you're on the lookout for a dressing table and crave sleek lines, the deco design of the table shown here, with its wood finish and simple design, speaks to those of us with a modern taste. This dressing table in a room adjacent to the bedroom is glamorous without being fussy. If you're considering using a similar setup for your dressing area, painting the two spaces the same color will unify the rooms. If you crave color, consider purchasing an older dressing table and painting it to fit your needs. If a matching chair isn't included in the deal, buy one that fits well with the table and paint it to match. The gorgeous natural light in this bathroom makes it the perfect space for a small dressing table. Medicine cabinet–style mirrors above the dressing table provide storage and give this dressing table a built‐in look. A dressing table chair is the perfect place for a nice, bright splash of color. If your prefer to keep things monochromatic, upholstering the dressing table chair in the same shade as the wall will make a simple statement.

Here, two natural wood planks echo the shape and orientation of the bed but add a little curve to the formality of the frame. Another benefit: Those planks fill the tall angled wall from bed to ceiling and lead your eye toward the expansive space above. Traditional artwork would have left an awkward large white area. If you have a print you really love, combine it with other accents for interest. This combination of artwork, a horizontal architectural piece, beautifully textured wallpaper and a great light fixture makes for an eye‐catching collection. If you have a long and low headboard, think about bringing a vertical element into the space for height. These hanging glass bubbles are the perfect contrast to the long, flat line of the headboard. Here's another option for spicing up your headboard. Hang art over a portion of the headboard and add a little DIY art to the wall behind. These two additions keep things visually interesting and unpredictable. Sometimes all a headboard needs is a little asymmetry. Here a small print balances the bed as part of a simple asymmetrical arrangment. The black and white print and frame complement the colors and shape of the bed.

This extra seating can serve as a comfortable spot to sit with your little one or to crash on those extra‐difficult nights. Creating a daybed in the nursery is as simple as pushing a box spring and mattress to the wall and adding a few comfortable pillows. The daybed shown here has the appearance of a lush sofa with the size and comfort of a full‐size bed. Thanks to stores such as Ikea and sites like Craigslist, finding an inexpensive sofa can be a simple task. If the fabric isn't exactly what you had in mind, don't rule out the piece. Try draping a blanket or quilt over the cushions to freshen up the look. If adding an extra bed or couch to the nursery has you concerned about space planning, consider placing the crib at an angle. This will keep the furniture in the room from hugging the walls and will help open up the space. If you incorporate the extra bed into the nursery decor, you will have less redecorating to do when the time for a big‐kid bed rolls around. Many young families enjoy spending time in the baby's nursery. The rooms are often peaceful, calming spaces, so adding a few toys for older siblings, like the stuffed animals and rocking horse shown here, will help them feel right at home too. Having a cozy spot for nursing or to rest with baby is a nice way to pamper yourself during those first few tiring months that baby's home. When you're no longer spending as much time in the room, you can easily remove the extra furniture and place it in other areas of the home.

Unlike in a kitchen, a living area or a den, private papers and materials stay private in a bedroom, and distractions tend to be fewer. The trick, of course, is to create an office that doesn't disrupt a bedroom's restful feel or take up more than its share of space. These homeowners and design pros have managed to come up with a happy middle ground. Take a look at how they made it work. A desk takes the place of a nightstand in this bedroom, yet it blends in so smoothly that it doesn't immediately read as a work area. Keeping the finish and style consistent with the bed helps to integrate the two visually, and the large piece of artwork mounted above takes some of the focus off the computer. This setup takes a similar tack. Trimming out the bulletin board with molding helps it to feel like a thoughtful part of the design rather than an incidental. Bedrooms are often designed so that windows flank the most natural spot to orient the bed, which can make furniture placement tricky. If yours is the same way, choose a low desk that won't obscure the sunlight and the views. The key to this bedroom office: the glam mirrored desk, which blends into the space because of its reflectivity. Although it's perfectly functional, stylish accents mask its workhorse side. If wall space is limited, go vertical. Custom or prefab shelves, which you can paint the same color as the walls, maximize every inch.
