Shades mounted inside the window frame, paired with eye‐catching trim, allow light control without feeling fussy. If you don't have historic molding, a window is a great place to add some. It's a smaller task than lining a whole ceiling, and you can do it in just one room.

"The inspiration for this bathroom was elegant glamour", says Jamie Herzlinger of Jamie Herzlinger Design. "The easiest way to get elegance into your bathroom is by using a frameless shower, because it keeps the look clean and sleek". Embrace minimalism. "We were looking to have the colors of the limestone tile bounce light around the room and to use few if any noticeable details, in keeping with our firm's philosophy of embracing minimalism", says David Webber of Webber + Studio Architects. Infuse a sense of calm. "I was inspired by the tranquil river and landscape surrounding this home to create a peaceful sanctuary that brought the outdoors in", says Justine Sterling of Justine Sterling Design. "The frameless shower design was key in creating transparency, openness and a sense of calm". Invite nature to be your guest. "This master bath is in a summer home on a lake, and the back of the house faces the woods", says Nora Schneider of Nora Schneider Interior Design. "The shower faces an entire wall of windows overlooking the woods, and I wanted to invite nature in as an evergreen guest".

Sullivan Building & Design Group made the most of this space with an interior renovation that made a bedroom with built‐in beds and book nooks. An all‐white palette keeps things from looking cluttered. A custom bed with built‐in drawers and storage makes the most of this small space beneath the eaves. Built‐ins and wall‐mounted lights are great choices in supertight spaces. An attic conversion doesn't have to have a country look. This space by Catalin David shows that an attic bedroom can easily take a contemporary turn. The addition of skylights makes the space feel less cramped. Follow the lead of Gast Architects and treat sloped ceilings like walls by wallpapering them in a pretty, petite print; here the treatment softens the look of the angles. A strong wall color paired with a crisp, white ceiling and trim accentuates the angle of the roofline in this springlike bedroom. A built‐in window seat is a great way to take advantage of a nook beneath the window in a converted attic space. Two twin beds are tucked under the eaves of this room, decorated by Alix J. Bragg. To make the most of the small space, bedside lighting is wall mounted and under‐the‐bed baskets offer extra storage.

If you and your teen are in the mood to tackle a crafty project, I love this DIY air plant terrarium tutorial on Houzz. It's chic and easy, the best combination! Update the homework zone. Ground the work area with a creative and useful chalkboard wall, or include a large bulletin board for pinning up lists, photos and inspiration. Pay attention to the ergonomics of the space as well, making sure the chair and desk are at the right height. Good task lighting is essential, and any additional storage you can squeeze into the space will help maintain order. At least consider a small filing crate and a basket for recycling. Add an entryway. In my experience, most messes come from the junk we put down as soon as we enter a space. Help prevent the big chaotic pileup before it begins with a few preventative measures: A coat tree or wall hooks will hopefully keep those coats and bags off the floor, and a dresser or table placed near the door can be a drop zone for mail, keys and other odds and ends. Provide hangout space. If you have the room, bring in a retired couch from the basement or attic. If space is tight, try a fluffy area rug with a few big floor cushions instead. Add an unexpected touch. Every room should have something that immediately catches your eye or makes you smile, and your teen's room is no exception. Make the room glow with a cluster of cheap and chic paper lanterns, scoop up a funky neon sign or a vintage marquee letter at the flea market, or frame a portrait of a favorite pet. Give hobbies and interests pride of place.

Published at Tuesday, September 19th 2017, 07:14:55 AM by Orlene Lefebvre. Bathroom. Prepare to combat chills. There's no getting around it – open showers can be drafty, especially in the winter months. Installing a heat lamp and radiant heat bathroom flooring can offset the shivers. Mount a heated towel rack nearby, and you'll be extra toasty as you dry off. Choose an appropriate showerhead. Unless you have a very large buffer zone, a standard showerhead that angles outward can end up soaking your space. Opt for a rain‐style model, which casts water straight down, or a handheld type that allows you to control the position and flow. If you do use a more conventional model, mount it so that the spray hits an opposite wall rather than the shower opening.

Published at Tuesday, September 19th 2017, 07:14:45 AM by Rosetta Loreta. Bedroom. The first time I saw a really fun kids' bed was in the 1980s, on the show Silver Spoons, starring a very young Ricky Schroder and Jason Bateman. Little Ricky's bed was a white racecar, and every kid wanted one (we also wanted that train he rode around the manse). Today the racecars have been upgraded to high‐end Ferrari models, and other thematic beds have followed suit, from boats to wrestling rings. See if you can find one that might ease your time‐for‐bed struggles. A small car is a great transitional bed between crib and big‐boy bed (perhaps a future Ferrari). I am sounding sexist; of course a car can inspire your little Danica Patrick or Lella Lombardi wannabes too. Have fun with the bed and let it inspire the rest of the room. In this case, the car is parked in swinging London. An overnight pit stop here, with a hideaway loft overhead, has all the fun of a motor speedway. A wall mural is a simpler way to put hot rods into context. Let you child count down the years until that driver's test with a mural of your hometown (in this case, Atlanta). Canopy beds were invented to keep out cold drafts hundreds of years ago, and royalty enjoyed them. Today they are still fit for a little princess. Nautical style can give bunk beds a boat‐cabin feel; a porthole window and marine lights add to the look. Bunk beds can take on all kinds of structures. Secret treehouse fort meets sleepy time in these tucked‐away bunk beds.

Published at Monday, September 18th 2017, 08:09:32 AM by Edda Braune. Bedroom. I never had a headboard until I made my own. A few years ago I followed Real Simple's step‐by‐step instructions (reproduced here) and in one day created my very own custom‐made, special‐to‐me piece of furniture (or is it an accessory?) using a staple gun, some cut‐to‐order plywood, foam, batting, and a fabric scrap I picked up at my favorite upholstery shop. If I were more patient, I could have added upholstery nails for added glam. A headboard can really make the room. It's like a piece of jewelry for your bed and depending on what you do with it, it can also be a piece of art. All you need to make a grid of small covered panels is plywood, a staple gun, some batting and some good picture hangers. Her spectacular homemade headboard shows that choosing the right fabric makes all the difference. This was made in much the same way I made mine (plywood, staple gun, foam, batting and that stunning fabric), but with a fancier cut on the plywood. If that seems daunting just keep in mind that this would look amazing as a big rectangle too. Here's her very helpful how‐to. A trifold room screen – minus one panel – set on its side and painted. VoilĂ . An ornate wooden room screen makes a perfect, exotic headboard. A salvaged garden trellis give this pale room its shabby chic cherry on top. As with anything that has peeling paint, spray a piece like this with a sealant to keep potentially toxic flakes at bay before using it in your bedroom. This is a freight elevator door turned on its side (notice the "Danger" stencil). Consider going muted and simple on the headboard and a little wild on the wall. Here what's behind the headboard is just as important as the headboard itself.
