Try a modern take on traditional. "The owner likes traditional claw‐foot tubs, but the house called for a more modern fixture", says Randall Mars of Randall Mars Architects. "This tub by Wetstyle has modern lines with that same feeling. In addition, it floats nicely in the space and enjoys great views. The pocket shutters offer privacy while flooding the room with light". Think green. "This bathroom was an ecochic project where we used several natural or recycled/reclaimed products", says Kerrie L. Kelly of Kerrie Kelly Design Lab. "The clients fell in love with the hammered‐copper tub when they saw it. Luckily the entire bathroom was demoed, so we had the opportunity to take an existing tub/shower and covert the space to accommodate a large shower and separate freestanding tub. It now serves as the centerpiece to the master suite renovation".
Make peace with a loss of privacy. If you don't like to feel exposed – even when you're alone in the house – an open shower may not be for you. Even if you don't have a bare window wall such as the one in this bathroom, you'll be on full view from the rest of the space. Consider a frosted or textured glass half‐wall as a compromise if modesty is an issue. Integrate the design with the rest of the space. Because there's no concrete border between an open shower and its surroundings, choose materials that will create a smooth transition. The wall tile in this bath continues seamlessly into the shower, with only a change in ceiling materials to provide a visual stopping point.
We each have our own idea of what makes a perfect bathroom. It could be a spectacular view from the tub, a spalike ambience, classic English country fixtures, or rich colors and exotic, hand‐painted tiles. Of course for many of us, a complete bathroom overhaul isn't in the cards. No matter what look is calling your name, there are ways to translate the key elements of the style you love into your bathroom without the high price of remodeling. Let's explore some accessible ideas in five dream bathrooms. Even without the massive square footage or fancy designer, you can pull together a gorgeous room with classic, crisp decorator touches that are well within reach. Swap out standard blinds for fabric shades and your bath will suddenly feel like a real room. Upgrade your towels for a fluffy version with contrasting piping or grosgrain trim.
